Ireland’s County High Point Challenge

Cairn on Mount Leinster (Carlow/ Wexford High point)

With the next birthday looming ever closer and the inevitable onset of Gerascophobia (fear of ageing) and the “what have I achieved in the last year”, I realised that this time next year I’ll be hitting the quarter of a century/ mid-twenties mark. With that in mind the bucket list is still rather full so I feel I need to knock at least one major thing off. With hill walking a regular hobby and doing research which centres on mountainous and upland landscapes I’ve decided to combine the two. One aspect of the research is to look at the diversity in perception and land use from place to place and over time and what better way to look at this than to go out and visit the various places on the ground.

So with that in mind the challenge I’ve set myself to complete before the 17th of July 2014 is to climb the highest point of every county in Ireland. While Ireland has 32 counties, some of these share a high point so there are 27 on the list and they are as follows:

The plan is to climb each of these in no particular order except the provincial highest will not be climbed until the others in the province are marked off and Carrauntoohill is to be the last. I’ve climbed a good few of these already but that all goes out the window for this. Some will be spur of the moment if I happen to be travelling through a particular part of the country and have the time and most will be on weekends. I’ll investigate each areas recorded past beforehand (or after), visit some of the archaeology and comment on the experiences here with the heading Ireland’s County High Point Challenge.

Anyone wishing to join in is more than welcome 🙂
